1999 Grand Am Power Steering

I found this topic previously covered in old posts however, I have a couple additional questions.
My car:
99 Grand Am SE 3.4 50,000 miles
-runs absolutely great with the exception of the power steering issue which began this past winter
Symptoms:
-loud squeaking while turning the wheel, particularly at startup
-squeaking goes away after a little bit of driving
-I am constantly having to put power steering fluid into the reservior
Questions:
If the issue is a blown pump, how do I tell?
How do I tell if the belt needs to be replaced?

first you need to find out where the fluid is going it has to be leaking somewhere at the pump possibly or could be a hose or at the rack and pinion.
squeeking may be a seperate isuue or could be related.
