Mercury Villager 1998, drive axle noisy

There's a "thumping" or 'clunking" noise (Not squeaky or hi-pitch), from the passenger front side.

At first, I thought it was the brakes because I just reapired it.

But, the noise stops when I apply the brakes.

I had a mechanic look at it, and he thinks it's the axle shaft (front wheel drive). The frequency of the "thump " varies with speed.

anyone had this problem before? and is the mechanic right?

Could it be the transmission?

thanks

Ken

Sounds like you may have a problem with your cv joint. jack the car up and inspect for a torn boot or grease leaking out.
