Clunk noise in rear

I am looking to buy a car and just drove a 98 honda civic ex sedan with automatic transmission. The car drove nice except that when I hit the gas from a stop or slow roll, there would be a clunk sound from the rear. I wasn't sure if this could be a differential or transmission problem and was wondering if anybody would have any ideas.

Thanks for any help
Sal

Well, since it's front wheel drive there are no parts of the drivetrain in the back; the transmission and differential are both in front of you. I would check the spare tire and jacking tools to see if they are laying loose and might be shifting when you hit the gas.

Thank-you tow guy that makes a lot of sense. When I had looked in the trunk he had a lot of stuff in the spare tire well.
