1997 Maxima cold starting problem

I am thinking of buying a 1997 Maxima GLE, but when the owner started the car, it sounded like the starter was not engaging properly. It made an almost grinding sound when the key was turned the first two times. The third time it was fine. I also drove the car, turned it off, and started it when warm and it started with no problem. He said his mechanic didn't think it was the starter, and wasn't able to figure it out. I haven't found anywhere on the Net where this problem is specifically adressed. What do you think?

I would ask permission to have it checked at a garage (not his and someone you do businees with if possible) and get a second opinion. Whatever it is would need attention and you wouldn't want to buy it not nowing how much $$$ would be involved.

sounds like the starter to me maybe the flywheel is broke or maybe just the teeth on the starter.

For example...it would not be too perfect to find out the flywheel's teeth were wore down on one side of the flywheel where the motor most often came to a stop at.
