Seeking for answers. . . Rear End Problem?
Hey guys. . .
Im new to the forum. I have a 1996 Camaro that I bought for 1400 bucks with 193k miles. It didnt turn on and had it towed to my home. I found out the engine needed to be completely rebuilt and I did that. It ran good for 300 miles then I lost complete contro in the rainl and hydroplaned into a sidewalk. Spindle messed up but no body damage. I replaced all 4 tires/rims and spindle and NOW i hear a funny noise that was not there before when driving.
Problem:
Its a 5-spd and when I drive above 40 mph i hear a light screeching noise on and off. Its not too loud but noticeable. Someone told me its the differencial that might need replacing or the wheel bearings. . Can anyone help me out and confirm this? If it were the bearings. . . any estimate on the cost? Thanks a whole lot guys in advance.

You probably have a bent axle shaft. Depending on how hard you had hit, you may be able to get by with replacing the shaft, bearing and seal. The noise you describe sounds to me like that every revolution, it occurs. It would be the rotor or drum making contact with the backing plate. Put the rear up on jack stands and put the car in drive. Walk around and see if the wheel wobbles or stays straight while in motion.

If there is no obvious signs of anhything bent, take the wheel off and take into a shop that has a road force variation wheel balancer. That will determine wether or not you have a bad rim or tire. A bad bearing out back, usually will produce only noise, no vibration. Something out back ain't right. Check it out as we described and let us know what you find.

okay well, I am replacing the wheel bearing on friday. I am going to hope that this solves the problem. If it does not I will be screwed and then check everything else out. In doing so I will replace my shocks as well to KYB Gas-A-Just just because I will be working in the rear anyway. what are my chances it will just be the wheel bearing and seal? Should I just end up doing the shaft anyway or is that a lot more work?
