starter problems

First, make sure you can rotate the engine by hand with a socket/ratchet. If you can't, then see if you can do it with the spark plugs removed. If a head gasket blows (as one example), you can actually have a cylinder fill up with anti-freeze like a fish bowl and it hydrolocks and the engine will not turn over. And the starter will just click. Reason: Liquid cannot be compressed in the cylinder (the way air/fuel can).

If you can only rotate it with the plugs out and then anti-freeze (or perhaps even oil) come gushing out of one of the cylinders when you crank it by hand or with the starter, then you'll have your answer as to whether it is battery/starter/connections, or something run amuck with the engine itself.
