97 chevy 1500 pickup a/c kicks off and on . full of freeon .low preshure switch is good. replaced a/c relay blower relay and blower resister. it is not runnig high presuer ether. the compressor comes on for about 3 seconds and stays off for about 3 min. i checked the preshures with a/c guages.

How sure are you that its full of freon. Did you measure both sides with a manifold guage set while it was running? when you say kicking on and off, you are talking about the clutch engaging and disengaging right? are your cooling fans coming on?

How often is the clutch disengaging?

It is supposed to cycle. At idle, it won;t do it much but if you rev it a bit it will do it more often. Standard operating conditions.

sounds like low freon level.

How do you know there is adequate freon in the system?

Let all of your freon out by pressing in the little pin where you put freon in (like you let air out of a tire), and when it's all the way empty recharge it up with freon while its running, my truck did this same thing it wouldnt stay on but when i drained the freon out and filled it back up all the way it didnt do it and now it runs perfect, feels like winter in there, when you fill it back up make sure its running and cut on the A/C wide open. also when you fill it up let it run for about 5 minutes and check the level again.

No, don;t do that. It is wrong and illegal to do this.

As another poster puts it, you will kill the penguins.

I like penguins, don;t kill them.

If the freon is low it can be recharged. Changing the freon is not something that needs done, it doesnt wear out like oil.

no it doesnt wear out but if his is like mine, it may use R12 but the dealer says you have to bring it in to convert it to R134A but you dont all you have to do is drain al of the R12 and then put in R134A and its done if his is R12 like most cars before 1994 are then he has to, but some after 94 are R12 too.

and if you hate the performance of the r134 you can get 414b (hot shot) you will have to call around to get it some where but any epa sect 609 a/c mechanic can get it. This stuff will get colder than r12 and it is environmentally safe and not much more expensive that r134.

r134 won because of du pont and patent rights and probably money under the table as that is how most business in auto goes one hand washes the other.

414b is also compatible with r12 oil and r134 oils its an awesome refrigerant.
