91 bmw 318i ignition cylinder

anyone know how to remove/replace the ignition lock cylinder in a 1991 bmw 318i? is there some way to do it by pulling the old one out, or does the steering wheel column need to be removed? also, assuming i get it out, can i somehow start the car by without a new clyinder?

Well gee...assuming you're not trying to steal the car...

It depends:

If you're lucky..insert your ignition key into the lock and turn the lock cylinder to "R". Then put a wire into the bore of the cylinder and pull out the lock cylinder. THe bore will below the key...like a little pin hole.

If you're unlucky and don't have a nifty little bore hole...remove the steering wheel, remove the steering column casing lower section, disconnect battery ground lead, press down lock with a screwdriver, and then turn key to point of locking and pull out lock cylinder.

As far as starting the vehicle with after the lock is out...never tried it. I assume it is possible by manipulating the ignition switch.

91 bmw 318i ignition cylinder

thanks

not trying to steal the car, just get it running

i wasn't lucky
and once it gets to fooling with the steering stuff,
i'm ready to stop the shade tree mechanics
i don't want an air bag slapping me in the face

i found a bmw mechanic to look at it
and to check out several other problems

next qustion is:
why do i keep driving older bmw's
when three year old hondas
are a dime a dozen?

Ah...because a BMW is a BMW...and a Honda is, well a {delete inappropriate comment}.

I'm a BMW man myself and to me it's a character thing. Hondas, while being nice and dependable, have NO character...just another plain-Jane asian sedan... blah styling, blah interior and blah performance.

Good luck and keep that BMW...or just upgrade to a newer used model if you must. Don't let me catch you posting next week, "Does anyone know how to fix "xyz" on a 2XXX Honda?"
