Expedition A/C making rattling sounds

98 Eddie Bauer a/c makes occasional rattling sounds when switch is turned on. At idle, RPM seems purge up and down. Turn off a/c goes away. Like something is putting a load on the system. What's causing this. Miles are 110,000.

With out hearing it first hand, you are describing a compressor on its way out. Your idle surging I would suspect other things. like clean idle air control motor housing. If the compressor is making noises like that and it goes while your driving your pretty much dead in the water. 2 ways, over heat, or battery goes dead, which ever comes first and how lucky you feel.

It sounds as if the compressor is getting ready to have a "catastrophic failure". If the surging idle only happens when the AC is on, then the failing compressor is probably the culprit. (The compressor getting ready to seize up and is lugging down the engine.)

You should get this repaired before it fails completely for two reasons. You don't want to get stranded and add a tow bill to the repair cost if it fails while you are driving. You also don't want to contaminate the AC system any more than you may have already. A failing compressor will often blow small metal particles through the AC system.
