A/C grinding noise from 2000 Honda Civic

I have a 2000 Honda Civic EX 85,000 miles. When I push the A/C button, there is no cool air and hear a cycling grinding noise in about .5 second intervals from under the hood. I started to put freon, but the pressure gauge was reading red suggesting there is something else wrong. Any ideas what this might be?

thanks!
Andrew

Probably a bad compressor bearing or locked compressor. Probably should be taken to a shop.

Can you see the compressor spinning? Is the belt ok? Is it slipping? Can you see the clutch engaging? (AC clutch)

unless you have hvac esperience, I would recommend taking it to a shop for and inspection. They can hook a manifold guage set up to it and check the pressures and inspect the compressor. It sounds like your clutch may be going bad.
