Without knowing much about the Grand Am, it is behind all the air ducting under the dash, and I've not heard of an easy heater core replacement. Others will be better enabled to help you, but the core is generally a bear.

Heater core..

I'm pretty sure yours in dead center of the dash, (as far as left and right go). Open the hood, and follow the 2 heater hoses to the firewall..
If it's that set-up, it's not REAL bad..Of course a center shift console makes it a little tougher..
I'm thinking around 12-14 screws hold the cover of the heater core to the case..

The book time is about 1.6 hours...not bad at all as heater cores go.

I went to Auto Zone Repair Info, excellent of them to have a site like that on the net, and took a look and it does not look too bad as far as heater cores go.
Its in the center behind the console.(if you have a console)
And there is a removable panel to get the core out.
That set up would make me happy if it were my car
