Question !998 Jimmy 4WD

!998 GMC Jimmy, Auto Trans, 6 Cyl., 86,000 miles.

This problem is occurring every once in a while but more frequently. When driving the right front wheel engages into 4 wheel drive without the driver flipping 4WD On/Off switch. The vehicle has automatic locking hubs.

I have to stop, either shift into neutral or into reverse and back up a bit to get it to release. The left front operates normally and doesn't have a problem. Has anyone had experience with this problem? Thank you.

your truck doesn't have locking hubs...rather it uses a two piece axle shaft on the right side to engage the wheels when 4WD is selected. something is going on in the shift mechanism on the right axle tube. the release spring is broken or maybe the shift fork...it's going to have to eyeballed to see what's going on. engagement on dry pavement is very bad for the drivetrain, you probably want to get this checked out pretty quickly
