Is strut spring compression necessary?

97 Lumina 3.1L 125k miles

I need to replace the cartridges on both front struts. Shop manual says to remove top bolt and replace cartridge. Apparently, the strut stays in place. It doesn't mention spring compression. I just want to make sure that it's okay not to compress springs. Thanks.

I'm not qualified to answer your question, but I know that has manuals online for repairs and it would be worth seeing what their manual says if no one here can answer your question (though I'm sure there are many people who can and will chime in shortly).
