Noise from airconditioner pulley

I have a 1998 Chev Malibu. There is noise coming from the airconditioner pulley. I am told that it will get louder until it stops turning. Then it will wear out the belt. Should I do anything about it yet? I do not use the airconditioner - even in the hottest Summer.

If it actually locks up the belt will break within a couple of minutes. I would have it checked as soon as possible. But it may not be the compressor. If yours is a serpentine belt, the noise could be coming from the tensioner pulley or the idler pulley. The bearings in them are a fairly common item to fail (not just in your make/model) and are pretty easy to check/replace. You will need to relieve tension on the belt and spin them each individually to see if you can detect any noise or excessive play.
