Question about rotors

Question about rotors

I need to replace the rotors on my 2002 Volvo S80.

Are rotors that are slotted and cross-drilled worth the extra expense? Is their performance and longevity that much better than the "standard" rotors?

Personally unless you take your car to the track on a regular basis slotted or cross drill (or both combined) rotors are a waste. I had cross drill/slotted rotors on my car for many years and I'll never use them again for a street car and I had no problems with mine. Some might say cross drill will last longer compared to blank rotors becasue they run cooler, that I'm not sure about. Save your money

I agree, the average driver won't notice a difference. Also I don't know if slotted/drilled rotors can be turned.

No they can't be turned or no they shouldn't be turned?

If you know what you're doing a drill rotor can be turned. I have turned my drill rotors in the past. I did it because I knew what I was looking for. As a industry standrad I might agree, you shouldn't turn drill rotors. Reason being you can't take .030 off a cross drill rotor the same way you can take .030 off a blank rotor.

One problem with drilled or slotted rotors is that they wear pads more quickly.

About turning drilled rotors (if they can be turned)... the holes need to be rechamfered, since the chamfer is lost during turning. Lack of chamfer leaves a sharp corner for fatigue cracks to develop from thermal cycling.
