Ford Econoline Van Brake issue

1983 Ford Club Wagon
Turbo Diesel (v8)
Automatic
Power Brakes
Lots o' mileage

Ok so everything "seemed" to be working good. then after leaving a store yesterday the brake warning light came on. The pedal was very stiff, the brakes "worked", like manual but worse.

Once the van started driving the light went out.

The first subsequent brake attempt worked normally, but when pressure was released from the pedal, the light came on again.

The next attempt was like the original (stiff)

Repeat ad nausum....

When stopped and the brakes are held at the pedal, they stay solid for about 5 seconds then very slowly begin to fade for about 1/3 of the travel then stop again.

The fluid level was down 1/4"-3/8" (i topped it off)

None of the connectors for the fluid show signs of leaking.

I followed the lines and checked all of the connections (that i could see) and they all seem dry and dusty.

My first thought is that the booster valve is bad or the rear seal of the master cyl is gone, but i'm a 60's Mopar guy usually so not up to speed on the power brake stuff.

I need to go get my kids from my ex tonight (or tomorrow AM) and really want this fixed right first.(duhh)

Help?

Steve

You might want to check your vacuum pump and make sure it's drawing around 21" of vacuum. A failing vacuum pump can cause a fading sensation in the pedal.
