Trunk won't latch and stay locked

I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier. Once I open the trunk, I can't get it closed unless someone actually sits on and closes it like an overstuffed suitcase. You can slam it as hard as you want and it won't latch let alone lock. Is there some way to lubricate the lock to make it work or am I going to have to replace the whole lock? Thank you.

You can spray some WD40 on the latches. Check and make sure the screws that hold the latches on are tight.

Trunk latches are a lot like hood latches. You may have to "finese" the latch, meaning to loosen the latch bolts and by trial and error find the sweet spot.
