flasher unit location

This is for a 1989 Ford Taurus GL sedan. I need to replace the electronic flasher unit. Have a Haynes manual, it says it is under the dash, on the left side, above the drop down fuse block. It is a black square unit, supposedly held in place by a clip. I can't find it. Any suggestions?

Best I could do is about what you already have:

Know anybody else with a similar vehicle? Yopu could turn on their flashers and listen to find it by sound.
