01 Toyota Tacoma 4x4

The check engine light came on and remains on. I have purchased a DTC reader. The reader gave a generic reading P0172-System too Rich (Bank 1). What does this mean?

When an O2 sensor reads rich- what are the possible causes? Probably the most common problem here is oil contaminated with fuel. This is usually the result of an underlying problem such as a misfire, a defective positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system, a dead O2 sensor, a bad coolant sensor, or any condition that causes the engine to run rich.

Try replacing your PCV valve. The PCV valve carries oil, water, and gases out of the crankcase and into the intake manifold for reburning. If you have a bad PCV valve, it will cause a rich condition. Try replacing that, if that does not solve the issue, replace the O2 sensor on that bank. Also, when you replace these parts, it may take a few minutes or a few miles for the CEL to go off.

Also, check your MAF (Mass air Flow) meter, it's attached to your air intake. ( a cannon plug with about 2-4 wires in your air intake.) Make sure it's seated well.

Check all your vacuum hoses for leakes as well.
