87 Civic Wagon Tranny Trouble

I have an 87 Honda Civic Wagon with a carburated, 12 valve, 1.5L, with an auto transmission. Between 2700 & 3000 RPM, it shifts back and forth between 3rd & 4th gears. Obviously, when it downshifts, the RPMs jump up to about 3200 - 3500. It does this about every 30 seconds on the highway. Is this a sign that it needs to be rebuilt, or does this sound like there is a pair of vacuum hoses switched around so that a vacuum advance is operating backwards?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless you've been tinkering, I doubt that it's something reversed and vacuum advance is ignition, not tranny. My guess would be that you either have a sensor problem or are loosing pressure internally. Probably time to have a good tranny shop have a look at it. Be forewarned that at that age you could be looking at a repair that exceeds the value of the car.
