Re: Engine Problem

Hello. I have a 1998 Accord that is in decent shape, 92,000 miles. At this point when I first hit the gas to build up speed I get a loud hum of the engine that eventually fades as my speed levels off. But when I come to a red light, the whole process starts over again. This may be as easy as I need a new muffler but I was hoping to be able to check and possibly fix this on my own. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brian in Mass

Too little info to work with. Is this sound actually coming from the exhaust? Is it coming from the engine compartment? Will it make this noise when you are parked and hitting the gas?
Also, where abouts in Mass you from?

Sorry about that. It's coming from the engine compartment and yes it does make this noise when I'm in park and hit the gas. And I described it as a "hum" in my first post. It's actual a lot more than that. I'm guessing when someone hears me going by they're saying "something's wrong with that engine". I live on the North Shore in Billerica, MA.....thanks

Is it your belts? If not the belts, then it could be a number of things.

1. Water pump main shaft seal

2. Alternator bearing

3. Power steering pump (this will be obvious, when you move your steering wheel)

4. Exhaust headers cracked

Pop the hood and try and pin point the location.

I grew up in Framingham, Mass. I miss the Northeast.
