carb,vacuum, clyinder problems

86 f-150 had hard starts cleaned carb, got sluggish on accl. cleaned works fine . now at hot idle is too low close to stall. going to replace all the vacumm hoses when bought they where all rigged and not in the porper order, also gettin oil in air filter. but really have to de a oil change very burnt and thin oil any recomdations on problem or advice on vacuum replacment? thanks

First, check the throttle plate shaft and bore. You may find that there's too much slop. With this kind of slop you'll never get a decent idle from the carburator and it'll have to be replaced with a new one.

If the bore is tight with no vacuum leakage, I'd recommend rebuilding the carburator with a rebuild kit. This usually perks up an old and dirty carburator and cures many ills.

I shudder to think of all the cars from the 60s and 70s that were junked, simply because they needed a new carburator.
