1st/2nd gear gone - manual transmission
I can't figure this one out...
I stopped at Home Depot, the car was running just fine. I started it back up and my clutch is sitting far to the left. It doesn't sit in the middle freely like it should. Example...with it in neutral, I can't shake the stick back and forth (no gross jokes). I can only move it to the right. It only has 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse. What could be the problem? Any thoughts out there?
thanks
Matt

what kind of car?
It would help to know what kind of car Some stick shifts go directly into the gear box and some have linkage.
Might be linkage came off or maybe a shift fork broke.

that helps
Since it is a front wheel drive it has linkage You will need to inspect all the linkage a pin might have fallen out. It helps to use two people one to look and see what is moving while the other guy moves the stick shift.( car off). It would also help if you could get under the car ( use jack stands). just look it all over for missing clips etc.

one more thing...would this problem cause a strange smell? Almost like something is burning? The engine does burn/leak oil a bit, but this is a different smell.
thanks for the help so far...

under car
the linkage is more then likley on the side of the transmission therefore it would be best to look at it fron under the car however some might be visible from the top. Get a good flashlight like a mag light and a inspection mirror. It is best looked at in the daytime take your time I really doubt your smell has anything to do with it unless the gearbox has a leak. Check the level while you are at it,Most take gear oil except some Fords that take ATF. Look in the owners book.
