Tailgate won't open

is it a do it yourself fix to get the tailgate to open on my GMC 96 1/2 ton pickup? I believe something in the latch assembly has loosened up where when I lift the latch the two whatchamacallems on the ends that lock the tailgate closed won't pull in quite far enough to allow the tailgate to open. They move some to a point where I can kick the tailgate and it opens but I need them to open a little further so I don't have to do the kick part to open it.

Is there a way to get at the inside of the tailgate to tighten things up so the tailgate will open or is this a repair I have to pay to have done?

There should be a small access type panel on the back side of the tailgate handle. (inside of bed area on tailgate). Unscrew this and manually open the gate. Once open, spray some WD40 on the locking mechanisms and handle. Over time the latches start to freeze up. This should solve your problem.

It also may help if you push in on the tailgate while your operating the handle.
