"Park" no longer parking

My '98 Ranger will no longer start in 'park' no does it lock the transmission, so that I have to be sure to set the brake when leaving the truck. Is it a simple switch replacement or does the whole steering column have to be romoved, or something else to check?

No switches. When you put the vehicle in PARK, this engages the parking brake mechanism within the transmission. There are little notches that hold gears stationary so you dont roll. If this mechanism is shot, then it most likely will result in dropping the transmission to access this part. You can inspect from the column, all the way down to the tranny to see if the rod that activates this mechanism is broken. Hopefully it is just that.
