What are some of the most obvious effects of a bad egr valve?
I have a dodge 1997 truck that from a standing stop does not want to get up and go. I will get up to speed it just takes much longer than anything else on the road. Yes I do get a check engine light flashing when I am trying to accelerate.

If engine run roughs (some backfire may heard on accel) , check your tune parts, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It does sound like engine has bad misfires underload ,engine light blinking on accellerate is usaully an indication of misfires.
Drop by your local Auto Zone and have a trouble code pull and go from there.
If the engine run ok is sound like restriction in exhaust system, bad Cat. Con, clogging muffler (debris from cat. con).
Bad EGR valve can causes couple of things from no power to stalls but will not causes the Engine light blinking on accelerate.
