Tercell speedometer problem

1995 Toyota Tercell 200,000 miles.
Now that the weather has gotten colder below 30 degrees or so, the speedometer has become eratic. When traveling at normal highway speeds it has shown up to 100 mph. At other times it is also not accurate.

Does anyone have any idesa on what to look for?
Thanks

It could be either the speedometer (cluster) itself, or the speed sensor.

Also, either a chipped speedo gear or drive gear, or the seal in the trans is leaking and the spiral motion of the cable pulls oil up into the speedo head when it heats up. Take the cable off the trans and check for an oil leak.
you can replace the drive sleeve and seal if leaking.

I have seen a binding cable also cause this on a few occasions.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know if this car has a speedometer cable or if it has a speed sensor? If it has a cable I can check it out. Often the cable just needs to be lubed.

I assumed it has a speed sensor. If so do you know where it is located?
Thanks
