'98 Kia Sportage 2.0L Dead

My neighbor asked me to look at his '98 Kia Sportage 2.0L 4cl. Said it just stopped dead.
I looked in the oil spout on the valve cover and noticed that the cam was not turning when cranking the motor. Uh_Oh, bad timing chain.
It has about 100,000 miles on it and has been well maintained.

Does this engine use a timing chain or belt ?
And does the valve train clear the pistons on this motor ?
How much should my neighbor expect to pay $ for this job at a garage ?
I said between $ 500 and $1,000
Do you agree ?
I don't have any hands on experience with a Kia.

Thanks for your replies.

Sorry to hear that Mack.........I do believe the Kia's are interference engines and nothing and I do mean NOTHING related to a KIA is cheap........I would price a valve job estimating at least half the valves are non usable against a good used engine from the boneyard.......I think the boneyard will win on this one
