Question '97 Dodge Ram 1500,won't start in park

Hello:
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4,5.2L,auto transmission and most of the time it won't start unless I put the transmission in neutral. Once in awhile in will start in park. Any ideas ? Thanks.

Its a failing neutral safety switch.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

On this particular vehicle, the neutral safety switch is located on the transmission near the shift linkage. It has 3 wires. It also controls the backup lights. It is screwed into the trans housing. You need to clean around it by first scraping the crud from around it, then spraying some brake cleaner.Use a deep socket to loosen it. Be prepared to get soaked in tranny fluid. I have changed these by loosening it to the last thread and changing it real fast without losing much fluid.Be sure to replace any lost fluid.
