1999 mercury villager rear bumper

the rear bumper on my daughters 1999 mercury villager just fell off while driving down the highway. She did catch it on a piece of re-bar a few days before it fell off. what do I need to reattach the bumper and how do I go about it?

Welcome to the diy forums

Are the bumper brackets still on the car or on the bumper. It is possible they have rusted and broke - did on my '90 jeep about 5 yr ago.

There is bracing behind the bumper that attaches to the brackets which attach to the frame, usually about 3 bolts per side [12-16 total]

Could just be the cheap plastic shell bumper that they put on over the steal one?If it's the plastic one, most likely all the fastner holes are oblonged or destroyed from tearing off. If so, you may be able to secure it back on using larger washers along with the screws.

If you can take some pics and upload them to a free photo sharing site like, Photobucket.com, we can get a better look at the havoc.
