2002 Dogde Ram 1500 question

4x4 - I am currently getting crappy gas mileage (10-11 mpg).

The check engine light came on a long time ago, the only thing my local mechanic has diagnosed is leak at the gas cap, which was fixed. Should I look for different mechanic?

Also, needs tie-rods. Was quoted $960. Is this in the ball park for a decent price?

Thanks!

Do not expect good gas mileage in a 4x4 Dodge. Only thing to improve it is to keep the plugs and wires changed, along with the fuel and air filters. Check tire pressures.

960 for tie rods? WOW! These are not that difficult to replace, even for a 4x4. You could get a Haynes manual and do this yourself in a couple hours.

Gas cap sounds reasonable. Do you fill the truck while its running? The fuel tank has a pressure sensor in it that must not be disrupted. Loosening, removing or otherwise disturbing the cap while the sensor is trying to calculate pressure trips a fault in the "EVAP" system. Ask the mechanic for a code number to be sure.

Well, if the light went away after replacing cap, then it is logical to think, that was the problem. Most EVAP codes are gas cap, or leaking canister.

Go to autozone and see if there are any codes still in there. They will read them for free.
