Yesterday my Speedometer needle began dropping to 0 under heavy acceleration but returned to normal when acceleration eased. This morning, the speedo did not work at all. Any suggestions about where to start looking for the fault?

you first have to know if the speedo is electronic or cable driven,in the electronic version the sensor may be bad or the teeth chewed off the sprocket,if it is electronic remove the sensor and check the condition of the sensor. if it is of the cable driven kind it may be the fault of a broken cable,or
a damaged sprocket.in either case you may be lucky enough to remove the sensor, turn the key on,and spin the sensor fast enough to get a reading on the spedo.
