Unhappy Transmission slipping???

1995 olds 88 royale automatic. Feels like transmission is slipping from time to time. Moving at 35 mph, excelerate and it slips into gear. Checked fluid seems ok. Would a tranny flush help? Take it to repair shop to see what it could be. Moms car, not wanting to spend a fortune to fix. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

If the tranny is slipping, the slipping clutches typically start to 'burn' the tranny fluid. Pull the tranny dipstick (it doesn't have to be hot) and put some of the fluid on your fingers and smell it. If you smell a burnt, acrid smell, that's a sure sign that clutches are slipping and the tranny is in need of an overhaul. If the fluid smells OK, it may be all right, or just not have slipped enough to burn the fluid, yet.

Something else that can give slipping symptoms is a plugged filter causing low main hydraulic pressure, so maybe a filter and fluid change is in order. But one has to ask, what would plug a filter? Most likely - worn clutch linings.

I'd smell the oil, maybe try a filter and fluid change, and drive it easy!
