drilling old shocks for disposal .why?

just changed the shocks on my Toyota t-100 in the manual toyota says to drill the shocks and let the gas out prior to disposal

what happens if I don't ?

what could it hurt ?

seems like a PITA unless there is a good reason .

(BTW old shocks are Monroe if that makes a difference )

Just throw them in the trash.

They probably want you to do that so they cannot be used again.

I believe it is because if they happened to be incinerated they could explode with a great deal of force.

Don't gas shocks have hydraulic fluid in them? This is my guess. But then why do the instructions specifically say "let the gas out'?... hmmmm.
