I have a1997 Chevrolet Cavalier and when I turn off the windshield wipers they stay in the middle of the windshield and when I turn the car off they stay in that position. They dont go back to the cradle.

there is a park switch in the wiper motor that goes bad wich causes the wipers to stop in the wrong position you will probably have to replace the wiper motor to fix the problem, as im not 100 percent sure on your model but usually the switch isnt servicable and requires wiper motor replacement.

just a bit of additioanl info that may or may not be applicable.
In a Ford (yes, I realize your car is a Chevy) in cars with intermittant wipers, there is an electronic control unit for the wipers that would cause this exact same thing to happen. The cure, of course, would be to replace that control unit.
The reason for my Ford info? Not sure if GM did anything similar but a bit more investigation would be prudent before replacing the wiper motor (which very well could be the problem as well) and not having the problem fixed after spending that time and money.
