truck problems

1986 ford ranger runs fine til hot then sputters and sometimes stalls out

How long has it been when the plug wires were changed? I had this problem and after change out of a lot of ignition parts the last one cured the problem, plug wires

You may also want to look at your catalytic converter. Same results for a clogged cat. Run fine cold, total power loss when warmed up.

Does it immediatley restart or does it restart with difficulty?

A lot of those (especially the '87 2.9) had problems with the ignition module. That is just the way those act. They're around $ up to $75, depending which one you pick. If you pull the old one it can be checked out before you invest in the replacement.
