Actually, on the 2.2 engine it is in the lower radiator hose. If it's a 2.4, it gets a little more complicated. Go to the following web site and put in your car's info. Then go to their maintenance guide section and they have pictures and step by step on replacing your thermostat.

If you have the quad 4 engine(I think it's a 2.4), it's under the exhaust manifild. look between the #2 & #3 ports, straight down and there's 2 or 3 bolts going straight down for the top of the housing. It's a sad situation. Maybe try backflushing the heater core first. I live in northern Minnesota where you use the heat 10 months out of the year. Your car uses a factory heater core with coolant flow tubes that you could barely pass a thread through. I usually remove the hoses from the heater core and put the garden hose on one end then the other until the water runs clear.That will get you through the rest of the winter.
