speedometer cable

My son has a 92 Geo Storm. When driving, the speedometer goes all the way up and stays there until he puts on brakes. Before it would go up and down and I put some grease on the cable and it started working again. Today, I put some grease on it and it did nothing at all to solve the problem. Does it sound like I need to replace the cable itself or possibly something else? thanks.

So you are saying the cable might be good? The speedometer itself might be shot? Can i replace just the bushings or would I have to replace the whole speedometer?

speedo

Usually when they act like this the bushings in the head are worn and the rotating part rubs the part on the needle, thus the minute the cable turns it takes the needle "all the way" no you cant get the bushings. There are some speciality shops that repair them but it would be a lot cheaper to get a used one. Good luck Tom
