upper strut mounts
I have a 1999 VW Cabrio. The front upper strut mounts seem to have a lot of vertical play in them when the front wheel is moved up and down(car off the ground). How much is too much play? Should these be solid with no movement?

The strut mounts would be fixed solid with no movement. The strut shaft would bolt to this mount, also with no movement.
The only moving part you have is the shaft sliding up and down within the cylinder of the strut.
