replacing front wheel bearings on 1981 Volkswagen Jetta
Can anyone give me basic instructions on the replacement of the front wheel bearings for my 1981 Jetta. I have received quotes to replace them ranging from $350 to $450. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Most vehicles require the following basic procedures:
Remove tires
Remove brake calipers
Remove large cotter pin from spindle nut
Remove large nut
Pull rotor off
Bearings will be in the hub.
It should be fairly easy. I don't think your bearings are pressed in so they should be removed quite easily.
Remember to use plenty of packing grease for the new ones.

I have an '85 Jetta (A2), here's what I do for VW pressed in bearings (front):
Loosen wheel nuts remove hub nut cap/cotter pin
Loosen hub nut
jack up car
remove wheels
remove hub nut
remove brakes/secure lines/secure caliper
remove disc brakes
impact off the front shocks
loosen a-arm nuts
remove CV arm bolts (need special 12-point allen wrench and a helper)
remove hubs from arms
take hubs to machine shop along with new bearings
machine shop presses in bearings
reassemble in reverse order
re-align car
Smile and have a beer!
VW rear bearings for A1 and A2 are not pressed in and can be redone without the aid of a machine shop.

Taz,
Hopefully they have replaced it by now. This thread was from February. Also, be careful of posting links to other forums. You only can post a direct link to the repair and not just the general website.
