I have a 1993 Ford Escort Manual, and I can not figure out how to check the transmission fluid/fill it. I've read and been told that the speedometer cable is connected to where I need to get to, but alas I do not know where the speedometer cable is. I feel totally inept at this point. I've looked at this engine for three hours now, with no headway. Please help as this is my family's only means of transportation.

The only time you should have to add oil to a manual transmission or transaxle is if the tranny is leaking oil. If you see any grease or wetness around the tailshaft or driveshaft seals, the oil level in the transmission or transaxle should be checked because it may be low. WARNING: Allowing the transmission or transaxle to run too low on lubricant can ruin it.
Saying this, usually you have to visually check at the tranny housing. There will be a plug bolt typical of a oil pan drain type. Manual trannys typically do not have a tranny fluid stick like typical auto's do.

I don't recall the speedometer cable being in the way, but I suppose it could be
I remember it being a plug on the side
There's the low one to drain, and the high one to fill
Both on the same side and somewhat near each other
I can't remember if they are a "bolt" head, or the "square" inset like the end of a socket wrench (w/o a socket on it) would fit into it type
But they are both on the same side
It's filled through the upper until just before it dribbles out
Yeah, it's a tough one to check
You have to stick a pinky or stick in there
