I have a 1987 Toyota Pickup Truck with a 22R motor. When you first start it, the temperture gauge goes clear up to hot but after it reaches hot it begins to drop back to normal. The heater will only blow hot air for a very few minutes then it blows cold air. If you turn off the heater motor for a while then back on, it will again blow hot air for a short period of time. I flushed and refilled the cooling system and put in a new thermostat. Does anyone have any suggestions?

check valve
I think your Toyota has a manuel temp selector valve that runs of a cable going to the dash Check it out make sure it works and is closing. I love those simple setups like toyota trucks use. I think it is inline with your hoses going to the heater core.
