Heater/AC controls

Vehicle is a 2001 Mazda B4000 DS Cab Plus 2WD V6: problem is as follows; turned heater control switch to defrost & then to off. Since that time; air comes out of the defroster vent. Although the knob can be freely turned to any setting, no other settings work. Even in the off setting, air continues to come out of the defroster. Temp control works fine, blower works fine. All settings worked ok prior to last week when knob was turned to the defroster setting. Have checked all fuses & have'nt found the control arm as yet.

Because I don't know Mazdas...all I can do is perhaps put a seed into somebodies head here. On MY car...a 91 Dodge Spirit, I found out, by luck, that my ability to change from defrost to panel or floor heat was governed by vacuum. I discovered I had a broken a skinny vacuum tube under my hood where it joined up by the power steering vacuum booster and I repaired the break and I then had the ability to have it come out the panel and heat vents instead of only coming out the defrost.
