'93 Ranger door bell

my sons 97 chevy malibu's fuel gauge needle has jumped below the stop pin and reeds in the negitive is there a way to fix this problem please advise thanks tony59

2 weeks ago I had to replace a water pump in my 1997 Grand Am, well I managed to leave a socket under the hood that happened to get jammed under my wiper motor. My windshield wipers stopped working. I checked the wiper trani, I replaced the wiper motor with a brand new that I had tested first, I checked the fuses, those are OK and I replaced the multifunction switch. I am a GM mechanic and I have never run into this before. I have also had other mechanics (friends of mine) look at it and see what they think and none of us can figure out what the problem is. Like I said I have tested ALL new parts in another 97 Grand Am that I have and everything works fine in that car. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing the problem? I live in NE, where we get snow (and supposed to be getting it tomorrow) and I need to fix these things. ANY input would be appreciated! Thanks!
