1996 Jeep Cherokee only starts in Nuetral

1996 jeep cherokee that will not start in park. We used to be able to push up on the gear shift and it will start. Now it will only start in Nuetral. Where can I look to fix this problem? Thanks, Tommy.

replace your neutral safety switch. This switch should be located underneith the shifter.

Depends on the trans....If it's an Aisan Warner 4 spd, the neutral safety is (EXPENSIVE) on the right hand side of the trans with a big ole wiring harness coming up the right side of the engine...........If it's a Chrysler built trans I wanna say it's the little bolt in switch on the left side of the case??? (may be wrong on this one)...........BTW.The AW4's neutral safety is ADJUSTABLE

It does have the neutral safety on the driverside of the trans with the wiring harness coming up the right side of the engine. So, I can just adjust this? It does not seem to be bad because it starts in neutral, just sometimes does not start in park and we have to push up on the shifter. Thanks for the good info!

The switch tricks your vehicle into thinking it's in neutral when it's in Park. When the inerds of the switch go bad, the sensor no longer can tell what gear it is in besides the default neutral position.

So...do I need to replace it or can I adjust it or bypass it some way?

You can always bypass something, just that when this is done, the car would be able to start in any gear.

I am not sure how you would adjust it, but if the part is cheap, just replace it.
