1992 Astro Van wheel trim issue

I just bought a 92 Astro Van. It had a flat tire and I changed it. One thing you have to do is remove the wheel trim, which consists of a metal piece and plastic cover that cover the center of the wheel (the owner's manual calls it wheel trim). I can't get it back on, in fact I broke it and also broke the wheel trim on another tire trying to figure out how to reattach it. My question is...how important is that piece? If it's just decoration that's fine, the van isn't going to get much prettier with it on. But I'm wondering if it serves a functional purpose by protecting the center of the wheel.

thanks,

You should be fine. This center cap serves a small purpose; to keep debris out of the center hub area. You should be fine though.
