Battery replacement and losing memory

When replacing a car battery and I want to lose the memory on car radios, etc, can I just hook up a battery charger to a plus terminal block and a ground underneath the hood instead of using a memory saver like the one in the link below?

I think your plan is good. Just set the charger in trickle mode and swap out your batteries. The gadget you found could be duplicated very cheaply. It would not work on my car because my 12 volt ports are controlled by the ignition key.
