Question Corsica is hard to start

I have a 1995 CHevy Corsica V6 with about 160k miles on it. I have been having a hard time getting it to start recently. I try to start it and just continues to try to turn over maybe for up to 1 minute at times. When it does start it is idling so low that it is hard to even tell if it is running. But, then the idle races really high and slowly lowers to a normal level and the car runs fine. It will however, die at a long red light. Also, just recently it started to produce a high pitch whiny sound while I drive.

Any thoughts on what may be the root cause of the problem?

Thanks!

Sounds are hard to diagnose unless you hear them, but for the no start I would change the fuel filter first and it wouldn't hurt to get the fuel pressure checked.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't really sure how to describe the problem. I was guessing that the fuel pump might be an issue. The fuel filter has only 5,000 miles on it and usually the symptoms for the filter are a little different.

Are there common symptoms for a fuel pump problem?
