1996 4.0 jeep cherokee auto transmission

Hello Folks,
Need some help.
After my jeep has been running and I get on the highway maintaining speed, it shifts back to 4th gear and will not return to the 5th gear unless I stop then return to highway speed. Ive had the torque convertor replaced by recommendation of my MEch.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forums

As far as I know, jeep only has a 4 speed automatic.

Are you sure it's down shifting after you reach crusing speed? How many miles on the tranny?

Thank you for your reply,
I am sure its down shifting, when in the overdrive my RPM's are 18oo at 55mph, then for no reason it shifts and runs at 2000+.
I am wondering if it is the transmisson control module, since the tran. has been opened and inspected less than 500 miles ago, no other problems noted. I am lossing confidence in the mechanic since this is the third time around, seems he doesnt know.
As far as miles, the jeep has 124k, I bought it used.

Thanks MarkSR

My cherokee is a 1990 with a 4.0 auto. I don't take it out on the open road too often but I think mine runs higher than 2000 rpm at 55 mph.

Does your mechanic specalize in transmissions? Might be time to check with another mechanic. Whoever you take it to probably ought to ride/drive with you to see exactly what's happening.

The mechanic specializes in transmissions, go figure???

What it boils down too, I'm trying to get as clear an idea of whats next, is it mechanical, hydraulic or electrical/computer. Can I do it myself or is it back to searching for a mechanic that isnt going to beat me up for 200.00 or more every time I walk through the door. (pardon my venting)

Unfortunatley Jeeps of that year have the older computer, so Ive been informed that the dianostic can be very vague.

Ive also considered purchasing the shop manual for the jeep but am not sure if it has a comprehensive troubleshooting guide. ??????

Since auto trans are pretty complicated I don't think the repair manuals go into much detail about R&R on them. I've got a Haynes manual for mine so I'll check later and let you know. IMO it is a good idea to have a repair manual for your vehicles if you do much work yourself. While I try to do all my own repairs, the only things I feel competent doing with an auto trans is change the fluid/filter or replace the tranny.

It might be time to find a different tranny shop. I've only dealt with 2, the first of which I'll never go back to again.

My Haynes repair manual for 1984-2000 jeep cherokee doesn't go into a lot detail for auto trans - 8 pages, mostly about servicings, installing and a few adjustments. The trouble shooting section only devotes about a 1/2 page to auto trans. I think there is another manual specific to automatic transmisions.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I've always figured opening up any tranny took more smarts than I've got Hope you can get it figured out without spending any unnecessary $'s
