Post on car battery melted!

I have a 2002 Saab 9-5 ARC and I just got a new battery for it because I thought the other one was dead. It ran for a while and the day after I installed the battery, the car would not crank again. I popped the hood and noticed that the "positive" post on the battery was melting. Can someone tell me what would cause the post to melt? No one I've asked has ever even seen this before.

Question

Are you sure you replaced the cables on the correct sides?

Also be sure you have the chassis ground connected...

That would be my vote. bad connection + hundreds of amps of current to the starter = lots of heat.
